Annual YakAttack Tournament - Troy Meyerhoeffer

2017 9th Annual YakAttack Kayak Fishing Tournament - 2017 Sponsors

When I was asked to do a write up on the YakAttack Tournament, I thought piece of cake. But I have sat down several times and started writing and just felt the words were not right. It's really not easy to tell someone what YakAttack is.

In 2013 I fished the KBF Open and placed high enough to fish the KBF Invitational. That’s when I met Luther, the president of YakAttack. By Saturday only 15 of us were left and we were having dinner at Blacks Fish Camp. Luther was talking to someone about the YakAttack Tournament and he invited me to come and when he mentioned the amount of BBQ and food they cook, I was sold.

That year it was still all camping and cooking in a farm field and it poured on us during dinner, but no one seemed to care. I didn’t hear one negative word. I ended up hanging out around the bonfire with kayak anglers I didn’t know and friends I knew telling fishing stories and just having a great time. I didn’t know much about Hero’s on the Water or Project Healing Waters but that would change pretty quickly. I now volunteer several times a year with Heroes on the Water.

When Luther announced at the awards ceremony how much the tournament had raised for Heroes on the Water and Project Healing Waters I was amazed. Every year it goes up exponential. The YakAttack Tournament has become a living breathing thing that grows with people that care more about it purposes than winning and it has become a family to me. A lot of the guys I only see that one time of year, but we start right where we left off. And as for Luther and his crew, Luther’s never ending energy flows right into it to make it the amazing thing it has become.
